Calcutta’s curry cooler

With the weather expected to return to scorching temperatures that are expected to hit the 30s this and next week, recent research shows that one of the best ways to keep cool is NOT to have an ice cream but to eat a hot curry!

A Milton Keynes restaurant has created a unique dish that it believes is the perfect summer feast that will help its customers keep cool. Created by the award-winning head chef at the Calcutta Brasserie in Stony Stratford, the Goan Spiced Grilled Mackerel Fillets with Apple and Fennel Salad is served with a cooling yoghurt

Chef, Salam Abdul said: “It is well known that hot foods, such as curries containing spicy ingredients cool your temperature down. Foods with chilli stimulate heat receptors in the mouth, enhancing circulation, causing the body to sweat and cool down faster. Our curry cooler does just this.”

Studies show that the effect of cooling down with a cold drink or ice cream on a hot summer’s day isn’t lasting as the body’s internal temperature cools down too rapidly which raises the body’s temperature again.

Eating hot food increases your internal temperature to match the temperature outside. The blood circulation increases and the body begins to sweat causing a cooling effect. Scientists call this “gustatory facial sweating”.

The award winning restaurant will be serving the ’Curry Cooler’ menu throughout the summer for £10.95 which includes cool rice and a peshwari naan. Diners are asked to give 24 hours notice.
